Crafting Genuine Event Stories: A Documentary Approach
Capturing events through digital media is an effective tool of preserving the moment of what would otherwise be fleeting, creating a tangible record of experiences, emotions, and milestones. Event video allows not only for documentation, but extending the impact beyond the physical space. What makes event videos compelling? We’ve all seen those event recap videos which rely on flashy cuts, upbeat electronic music, and bizarre graphic effects to create a sense of excitement. But how do we go deeper than that? At Humxn Media, we view event videography as an art form—an opportunity to tell stories that not only capture the emotion of the gathering, but resonate long after the event has ended. Our philosophy revolves around blending documentary filmmaking techniques with emotional emphasis and place-based storytelling, transforming what could be a simple recap video into a compelling narrative that captures the heart of an event.
Understanding the Story Behind the Event
Not every event is in itself a story. But every event has a story waiting to be told. It’s not just about what happens on stage or in the conference rooms—it’s about the people, the place, and the purpose. Before we even pick up a camera, we immerse ourselves in understanding the event’s core themes. Who are the key event participants? What messages need to be conveyed? How does the location contribute to the overall experience? And what is the overall goal of utilizing the event footage to further a larger goal?
We ask these questions while also focusing on the human connections that give an event its emotional depth. By highlighting relationships and interactions, we reveal the story beneath the surface, allowing viewers to connect with the subjects on a personal level. We focus on these human elements to go beyond simply documenting the event; we capture the heart and soul of the experience. These connections bring warmth, relatability, and depth, transforming an event from a mere sequence of scheduled activities into a vibrant story filled with emotion and meaning. In doing so, we aim to create a powerful, personal connection that resonates with viewers long after the event has ended. They aren’t just watching an event unfold—they’re experiencing the dynamics, emotions, and personal stories that define it.
For instance, when we documented Inatai Foundation’s, “Shaping The Future” convening around WA State, we didn’t just capture footage of speakers and attendees. We looked deeper, focusing on how the unique landscapes and local communities were integral to the event’s message. By treating the location as a character in the story and capturing the raw, unscripted moments, we grounded the narrative in a specific time and place, making it more relatable and impactful for viewers.
In the post-production process, we also advise giving individuals the opportunity to review the rough cut of their testimonial, allowing them to have the “first edit”. This practice enables interviewees to see how their story will be presented even before the contracting organization, reducing power dynamics and external pressure that can result from power imbalance. Finally, we recommend telling individuals featured that we can remove or edit their story in the future, should they change their mind.
The Power of Place-Based Storytelling
Place-based storytelling is central to our approach at Humxn Media. We believe that where an event takes place is just as important as what happens during it. The environment—whether it’s the rolling hills of Eastern Washington or the small-town charm of Shelton—adds layers of meaning to the story we’re telling. It provides context, evokes emotions, and helps viewers connect with the content on a deeper level.
In our work, we go beyond the typical event b-roll. We capture the essence of the location, whether through wide shots that showcase the landscape or intimate close-ups that reveal the textures and details of the environment. This method allows us to create a sense of place that is integral to the narrative, making the story more immersive and engaging.
Because the environment shapes how the event unfolds and how people interact within it, this approach not only enhances the visual appeal but also serves to deepen the story. By making the location an active participant in the narrative, we ensure that every frame contributes to a fuller, more resonant storytelling experience that draws viewers in and leaves a lasting impression.
Leading with Emotion
Emotions are the heartbeat of any event—they’re what make the moments memorable and the stories worth telling. We aim to understand the emotion of the event overall as well as the attendees present, to create a narrative that is not only seen, but felt. It’s these authentic, unscripted emotions that connect viewers to the subjects on a personal level, drawing them into the experience. By highlighting these emotional moments, we make the story relatable and engaging, turning an event from a series of actions into a compelling human journey. Through our lens, we aim to reveal the underlying emotions that drive the event’s story, ensuring that each moment is not just documented, but felt.
Crafting a Documentary-Style Experience
Our approach to event videography is heavily influenced by documentary filmmaking. We focus on capturing genuine moments and real interactions rather than staged or scripted content. This involves a careful balance of pre-production planning and on-the-ground spontaneity. The cinema vérité style we adopt allows us to document events as they unfold, revealing deeper truths about the subjects and their environment.
Before the event, we identify key participants and plan our shots around the narrative we want to build. We might focus on the journey of a particular attendee, the behind-the-scenes efforts of an organizer, or the collective energy of the community outside of the venue. On the day of the event, we film interviews, candid interactions, and the environment in a way that feels organic and unforced. The goal is to let the story unfold naturally, capturing the event as it happens while staying true to the overarching narrative. Throughout this process, we are mindful of ethical storytelling practices, ensuring that we represent our subjects truthfully and respectfully.
Elevating Event Videography
We’re passionate about pushing the boundaries of event videography. By combining documentary filmmaking techniques with place-based storytelling, we create videos that do more than just document an event—they tell a story. A story that is rich, nuanced, and deeply connected to the place and people involved.
If you’re looking to elevate your event videography and create content that truly resonates, we’re here to help. Let’s work together to tell your story in the most powerful and impactful way possible.
