FAIR START FOR KIDS
The Fair Start for Kids Act in Washington State makes high-quality early learning, including child care, preschool, and programs for infants and toddlers, more affordable and accessible for families and more sustainable for providers. These videos were produced in support of the Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families outreach strategy to communicate eligibility for parents. For this project, we produced a version in both Spanish and English to elevate accessibility in a culturally-relevant manner.

Our Approach
In partnership with TDW+Co, we developed a script and plan to create an animated explainer video that was specifically designed to reach Latinx families who qualify for the child care subsidy. Our deliverable would be two videos - one in English and one in Spanish - to be able to effectively communicate who was eligible for the child care benefit and how to sign up with in a culturally-relevant manner. Our team consisted of multiple individuals to support the graphic design and motion graphics necessary for the animated sequences. In addition, we contracted with multiple individuals to film and produce a live-action interview compilation that would be embedded in the later half of the final video.
Challenge
One of the primary challenges that we faced during this project was a quick turnaround. Our aim was to deliver the videos to be posted and promoted to align with the end of the public school year, when parents would most likely be looking for additional support for child care. This project involved a number of entities, all who deserved opportunities to weigh in and provide feedback, including: ourselves, TDW+Co., the Washington State Department of Children, Youth and Families, and another strategic consulting agency. This required tremendous coordination and communication between parties to deliver the projects on the intended timeline. Another challenging feature of this project was delivering a video in both Spanish and English. To do so, we contracted with two bilingual individuals who could narrate the part of Sofía, our main character, and the narrator. To ensure cultural relevance and ensure that the translation of the Spanish was regionally appropriate, we also sought their input on the script and closed captions.

Impact
The final videos were embedded on the web page where individuals can learn more about the child care benefit and sign up. Having the videos on both the English and Spanish versions of the websites provides an opportunity for folks to access the necessary information in a more accessible and culturally-relevant manner. To increase the awareness of the child care benefit, we also produced a 30 & 60 second version to use on social media.
