SHAPING THE FUTURE:
PENINSULA & SOUTHWEST WA

KAMILCHE, WA

Shaping the Future is a series of events that brings together community leaders from various regions across the state of Washington. At these gatherings, organizations build connections and learn to build the power and resilience of their communities to advocate for a more equitable Washington. We were invited to capture the second gathering in Kamilche, WA, which brought together over 90 leaders from 55 organizations in the Olympic Peninsula and Southwest Washington over the course of three days. Our task was to capture the energy of the event, show the impact of connection and power-building, and demonstrate how Inatai Foundation is a convener of organizations across the state.

Our Approach

In alignment with one of the key themes of the event, our approach for this project was very collaborative. Our partnership with the communications team at the Inatai Foundation really drove this project, from every creative decision that was made to each deliverable that was decided upon. In pre-production, our first objective was to develop a creative brief that outlined the key messages and themes we aimed to capture over the course of the event. Knowing that this project would be driven by the voices of the community, we identified five individuals who would guide the story and multiple other folks who we could interview, considering racial, ethnic, gender, and geographic composition. In collaboration with the communications team, we hosted five pre-interview conversations with the community leaders who were selected to be interviewed. Pre-interview conversations not only serve the purpose of setting clear expectations for the interviewee but also allow an opportunity to begin relationship building prior to the date of filming and get the creative juices flowing from all directions.

Challenge

There were several features of working on site at the gathering that required increased diligence and attention. During the primary days of the gathering, the agenda was packed. To capture more organic shots of attendees interacting and identify and film spot interviews, it required not only patience but also proactive planning to note opportunities. Secondly, and most importantly, this production required an added layer of respect and deference. The primary purpose of this gathering was to create a space where community leaders could build connections and share vulnerably. To capture these moments authentically without detracting from this goal, our approach was gentle and respectful. Doing so, we were able to capture the emotion of the attendees of the event while maintaining adequate distance so as not to affect their vulnerability. This allowed us to build trust and intimacy between attendees.

Impact

Our deliverables were a full event gathering recap in both English and Spanish, a 30 & 60-second cut (in 9:16 and 16:9), and five vignette talking head interviews. With a multitude of different length deliverables in two languages, Inatai is able to convey the energy of the event on multiple platforms for multiple audiences.
