Coocon House: Breaking the Cycle

In support of Cocoon House's annual fundraising event, we have had the honor of getting to know multiple young people who have accessed services from the organization and working in collaboration with them to tell their stories visually.

Process

Stories about youth homelessness are often reduced to statistics or framed through deficit, obscuring the people and systems behind them. In our partnership with Cocoon House, an organization serving youth and young adults experiencing homelessness and housing instability in Snohomish County, we aim to break down misconceptions and harmful stereotypes about the issue, while uplifting the impact of the organization and the young people it serves. Our work creates space for more honest reflection and a deeper understanding of both the challenges and possibilities for change.

We begin each project by spending time with Cocoon House staff to understand the present landscape, build trust, and identify participants who are open to sharing their stories. We then host a pre-interview conversation to learn more about each young person’s experience and begin building a relationship. From there, we let young people and their interests shape the story, whether that means going fishing or golfing, playing pool with friends, eating Chinese food, or simply spending time alone at a park. Our goal is to move beyond the surface and visually convey the individuality and complexity of each young person we meet.

Cocoon House: The Siblings

Ysa, Junie, and Cesar are three siblings that have received various forms of support from Cocoon House. While their stories share definite commonalities, their personalities and perspectives differ tremendously.

Cocoon House: Chance and Sarah

Chance and Sarah are two amazing young people - funny, charismatic, soft, and open - who have very unique stories, but a similar path toward working collaboratively with Cocoon House and other young people to change their circumstances.

Cocoon House: Trey

Resiliency alone doesn't define Trey, but the optimistic attitude that accompanies his resilient spirit and selfless approach toward supporting others in the community is what makes him so special.

Each testimonial we filmed is presented at the Cocoon House annual Fall fundraising event called An Evening of Silk. The goal is to help the audience hear directly from young people supported by the organization, to witness the impact directly, and feel emotionally moved to support the organization. Each year, the videos have helped to raise over $100,000 in financial support.

The biggest marker of success for us, however, is not the dollars raised, but the reaction from the young people profiled and how adequately they feel portrayed on the big screen. Working alongside the young people to shape their own stories, we feel grateful to see their positive reactions each year.

When Chance and Sarah saw their story live, for example, they immediately stepped out of the room, overwhelmed. When they returned a few minutes later, they were in tears. They hugged our team and said, “This was so amazing. Thank you.”That was the real impact—the story lands where it matters most, with the people who lived it.
