Shaping the Future

Shaping the Future is a statewide gathering series created by Inatai Foundation, bringing community leaders across Washington together to share space, build relationships, and strengthen collective power. Across multiple regions, Humxn Media partnered with Inatai to document the series as a larger story about place, people, and the work of building a more racially just Washington. From Eastern Washington to Northwest Washington, South Central Washington, and Thurston, Pierce, and King counties, each gathering carried its own local context and energy. Together, the videos show how change is shaped over time, region by region, relationship by relationship.

Process

Our role across this body of work was not just to document the events, but to help tell the story connecting them.

We worked closely with Inatai’s communications team to understand the goals for each gathering, shape interview questions, identify key themes, and center the voices of community leaders in each region.

On the ground, we filmed sessions, interviews, informal moments, local landscapes, and the spaces where people were building connection. Each piece was shaped around the feeling of its region while staying connected to the larger statewide vision.

The Shaping the Future convenings were never only about what happened in the room. They were about the learning, listening, and ongoing work that happens between gatherings.

Shaping the Future: Thurston, Pierce, and King

A reflection on the first and final regional gathering, centered on leaders from Thurston, Pierce, and King counties building connection, alignment, and collective power.

Shaping the Future: Northwest Washington

A place-based recap following community leaders across Northwest Washington, highlighting shared purpose, regional challenges, and the people working toward systems change.

Shaping the Future: Eastern Washington

A regional story rooted in Eastern Washington, centering the people, organizations, and landscapes shaping local movements for racial justice and equity.

Shaping the Future: South Central Washington

A regional recap centered on leaders and grantee partners in South Central Washington, with a focus on local context, relationship-building, and the shared commitment moving the work forward.

The final body of work gave Inatai a flexible collection of storytelling assets that could be used across event recaps, social media, public communications, internal reflection, and future gatherings.

More than event coverage, the videos became a living archive of the Shaping the Future series. They show how community power is built across Washington, not in one region or one room, but through many communities leading at the same time.

Together, the pieces help carry the energy of the convenings beyond the people who were there, showing what it means to lead with care, show up with purpose, and build power alongside others.

Results

To help the story travel beyond the convening spaces, we also created short-form edits designed for social media and public sharing. These pieces offered a more immediate way to carry voices, themes, and moments from the series into broader conversation.
