Flying Kites: Elevating Impact

In partnership with Construction for Change and Flying Kites, we tell the story of a school that is doing more than just teaching. In the highlands of Njabini, Kenya, we set out to capture how a building can become a place of belonging, possibility, and change.

Process

This project began in Seattle with early conversations and a shared vision. We were asked to help bring a story to life, one that could show how investment in education goes beyond the physical structure. It was about what happens inside those walls, and what that space can mean for a student, a teacher, and a community.

Once on the ground in Njabini, our focus shifted to listening. We spent time in classrooms and courtyards, sitting with students and staff, learning how Flying Kites was building something lasting. Their approach to education is both practical and deeply human. They are creating safer and more inclusive schools, especially for girls, through access to mentorship, clean water, better nutrition, and a strong support system.

We did our best to reflect what we experienced. Our filming process centered on care and relationship. We wanted each scene to carry the quiet strength of the students, the patience of the teachers, and the sense of possibility that exists in this place.

From the beginning, the project was guided by a simple idea. That a building is more than bricks and walls. It is a container for potential. And when designed with community in mind, it can become something far more powerful. This was the spirit behind the story. It was also the heart of the message that Construction for Change calls Bigger Than Buildings.

The final video premiered at Construction for Change’s annual fundraiser. It was the anchor for the evening, helping the organization raise over 75,000 dollars in support of their ongoing work.

But beyond the outcome, what mattered most to us was the response from the community. The film helped people connect with the purpose behind the project. It reminded them that education is not just about access, it is about dignity.

For us, the project was a reminder too. That good storytelling requires proximity. It takes being there. It takes paying attention. And when done right, it can play a small part in something much larger.
