Similar to previous Shaping the Future gatherings, our role in this project was not just to document an event but to help tell a broader story—one about community power, place, and people leading systems change.
We worked closely with Inatai’s communications team to develop a shared vision. We held pre-interviews with selected community leaders, built story arcs grounded in lived experience, and collaborated on key themes of the event.
For this piece, we centered our focus on conveying the benefits and impacts of building collective power for political change. We filmed on location with two grantee organizations and captured local footage in Ferndale, Bellingham, Mount Vernon, and throughout Northwest Washington. We designed the story to emphasize shared purpose across difference, showing unique challenges that the region faces, while emphasizing the common, systems-wide exclusion that communities throughout the state have in common.
Our deliverables included documentary-style recap videos in English and Spanish, short-form reels for social media, and a set of vignette-style interviews, featuring five short talking-head pieces that lifted up local organizers and their reflections on the experience.
The videos are now used by Inatai to share stories from the field, highlight grantee voices, and show how regional gatherings build real momentum for systems change. More than just recaps, the videos offer a deeper look at what it means to lead with care, show up with purpose, and build power alongside others.
They also serve as a reminder that while Washington is often viewed through the lens of one region, the story of equity is happening everywhere. Inatai’s gatherings show that our people are everywhere, and that the future is being shaped by them quietly, urgently, and together.
